“There are two things that I hate, change and the way thing are”.

Unknown

It resonates.

I heard this quote about 2 years ago, and it has resonated with me ever since. How many times in a day, a month, or a year do I choose the status quo over what I know, deep down in my heart, is the right choice for a better future.

This can be applied to so many things. For me, it begin first thing in the morning. The first hard choice of my day: will I snooze and stay in my warm bed for another 10 minutes, or will I choose to get up.

I choose change.

Imagine that there are two versions of yourself, the you who lives with the status quo, and the you who embraces change.  The you who lives with the status quo keeps doing what you’ve always done.  You choose the known over the unknown.  The easy over the difficult.  You choose today’s comfort over tomorrow’s growth.

Then, there is the you who embraces change. You execute on the your plans.  You strive to be the best version of yourself.  You accomplish more than you ever image you could in your lifetime.

As of today, either of these futures can be yours. All that lies between the two… change.

Why change is hard

Why is change so hard? I could make a list a mile long. Humans are creatures of habit. We are wired to fear the unknown. We are afraid of what other people might think. We don’t want to make a fool of ourselves. We want to have all the benefits without any of the hard work. We don’t know the next step.  Sometime the results aren’t seen until days, weeks months, or years down the road.

Do not let these excuses stop you!

Execute change.

I hear so many people talk about what they want, and then watch as they continue to do all the things that prevent them from getting there?  Why are they choosing the to be unhappy with their situation, but do nothing to get there.  Some go as far as making a plan.  All plans fail without execution. The only thing keeping us from the best version of ourselves is change. Chose to be uncomfortable.  Choose change!

How to change.

You’re desire to change has to be greater than your comfort in your current situation. You have to start by keeping the promises you make to yourself. For me, it starts right before I go to bed.  I set my alarm, a promise to my future self that I will get up. Breaking this first promise starts the day off poorly.

It doesn’t take massive change to have massive results. It is all of the small choices throughout the day that have huge impact over time. The decision for change happens in the moment, the results lag behind. It only takes a moment to decide you’re going to workout instead of watching Netflix. It takes less than a second to decide to smile instead of complain. Consistently choosing the action that leads to your desired results will eventually become easier, as they are no longer unknown.

Henry Ford said it best

“If you always do what you’ve always done, you’ll always get what you’ve always got”.
